• The Army Reclaims One of Its Artillery Brigades
An artillery brigade has just been reestablished within the Army.
The 19th artillery brigade has just been reborn in Lyon, in the presence of General Mistral, military governor of Lyon, general officer of the south-east defence and security zone and commander of the south-east land zone.
This is more of a rebirth than a new creation for this unit, which was originally established 30 years ago, partly drawing from the 54th Artillery Regiment, before being disbanded in 1998.
A quarter of a century later, the modernized version retains the 54th Artillery Regiment and incorporates the 1st and 61st Artillery Regiments, as well as the Drone School.
Operating in-depth, the 19th Artillery Brigade will be the only one to deploy Patroller tactical drones and the successor to the Unitary Rocket Launcher, expected by 2027. It will report to the future Command for Deep Action and Intelligence (CAPR).
Since August 1st, the development of this CAPR has been under the leadership of Brigadier General Claude-Alexandre Pingeon. The integration of artillery and intelligence units was already visible during the recent Bastille Day military parade on July 14th, where the commander of the 1st Artillery Regiment and his color guard symbolically marched down the Champs-Élysées alongside the Intelligence Command (COMRENS) formation.
The 19th Artillery Brigade of the Rapid Action Force was first created on September 1, 1993, in Maisons-Laffitte.
In 1994, the brigade reinforced detachments in support of Operation Turquoise in Rwanda and Zaire.
In 1995, it supported the Rapid Reaction Force, deployed in support of the UNPROFOR in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In 1996, a mixed detachment formed the 420th Mechanized Infantry Division (DIM) for the UNIFIL mission in Southern Lebanon and was deployed during Operation Grapes of Wrath, conducted by Israeli forces.
As part of the professionalization of the Army, the 19th Artillery Brigade was disbanded on Ju
